A concert in memory of Frederick Hewitt, late organist of St. Paul's Church, Newcastle- Under- Lyme. The programme includes sonatas for violin and continuo by Bach, and by two composers of a slightly earlier generation, J.J Walther and Biber. Walther and Biber are two of the most influential composers for the violin of the late 17th Century, exploring the musical and technical possibilities of the instrument, with a free, highly expressive style (Stylus Fantasicus). Bach would most likely have known both composers, and elements of this style can be heard in his own music also.
